WEST PARK OVAL
Burnie City Council
February - March 2018

West Park Oval and Cycling Track is the premier sporting hub in Burnie, a port city located on the north-west coast of Tasmania.
As well as being the home ground of the Burnie Dockers AFL team, the Burnie Athletics Club and the City of Burnie Cycling Club, the venue hosts prestigious events, the Burnie Gift and Burnie Wheel each year along with A-grade cricket matches.
ETP Turf was engaged by Burnie City Council as a result of ongoing concerns with the condition of the oval, particularly during winter following periods of wet weather when the surface became extremely wet, muddy and susceptible to damage.  These poor surface conditions also posed significant risk of injury to players utilising the ground.
A complete reconstruction of West Park Oval was not feasible as the playing space was required for use during the pending AFL season.  A time sensitive solution was therefore required.  The ETP Turf team worked closely with Burnie City council to design a network of subsurface drainage and the subsequent surface works required to reinstate the area back to playing condition as quickly as possible.
Throughout the project, ETP Turf provided independent monitoring and supervision of the works including drainage installation and grassing the drain lines and any disturbed areas. In additional, ongoing reporting on the condition of the surface was provided to the client each time it was inspected.
The ETP Turf team skillfully delivered the West Park Oval and Cycling Track drainage and surface works upgrade within the timing parameters required to meet the commencement of the 2018 AFL season. The playing space was significantly improved and can now cope with consistent use to be enjoyed safely by the various tenants and the Burnie community without deteriorating in the winter months for many years to come.
